Origin and History of the Claddagh Ring
The Claddagh Ring is a traditional Irish symbol and represents friendship and love. It is often used as a wedding or engagement ring. Other popular items of Claddagh jewelry are ear-rings and necklaces, the Claddagh symbol also makes a beautiful pendant. The ring was originally designed in the town of Claddagh, Galway in the 17th century and features a heart with a crown placed on top held by two hands. The meaning of the individual components of the ring are as follows:

  • Heart symbolises Love

  • Crown symbolises Loyalty

  • Hands symbolise Friendship

Wearing the Claddagh Ring
Claddagh Rings are often worn by people of Irish heritage, generally as a wedding or engagement ring. There is a specific protocol for the way the ring is worn depending on a persons marital status, the protocol is as follows:

  • On the left hand, tip of the heart pointing towards the wrist, the person is married

  • On the left hand, tip of the heart pointing towards the fingertips, the person is engaged

  • On the right hand with the tip of the heart pointing towards the wrist indicates that the person is in a relationship

  • On the right hand with the tip of the heart pointing towards the fingertips, indicates that the person is single and may be looking for love (children also wear the Claddagh ring in this fashion)
